Funding Opportunities

The following is a list of recurring funding opportunities our lab has identified as relevant for our research areas.

First and Second Year Only (sorted by deadline)

+* SWE Clare Booth Luce Graduate Fellowship

Amount:      $20,000 for first year

Deadline:    February

Description: Must have been in Society of Women Engineers (SWE) leadership role as an undergraduate and be a current SWE member admitted to a PhD program in engineering. Career plans include intent to teach at college/university level.

 

+Hertz Foundation Fellowship

Amount:      $32,000 per 9-month personal stipend, full tuition equivalent, renewable for up to 5 years. 

Deadline:    October (late)

Description: Supports exceptional doctoral students, with understanding that the Fellow makes a moral commitment to make his or her “skills available to the United States in times of national emergency”.

 

^+NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Amount:      $32,000 stipend / $12,000 tuition per year for maximum of 3 years, usable over 5 year period

Deadline:    November (mid)  

Description: To fund early stages of graduate study in fields of science and engineering. May not have completed more than 1 yr of graduate course work (ok to apply during first semester of second year).

 

+National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Amount:      $31,000 per year for 3 years plus tuition and fees and up to $1,000 per year for medical insurance

Deadline:    November

Description: To support U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pusue a doctoral degree in one of 15 supported disciplines (civil engineering and geosciences are included). Must have completed less than two full-time years of graduate study.

+*American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowships

Amount:      $20,000

Deadline:    November (mid)

Description: To provide funding to women in the final year of writing their dissertation. Must defend between April 1 and June 30 of next academic year (i.e., 16-19 months after application deadline).

 

+Josephine de Karman Fellowships

Amount:      $22,000

Deadline:    January (late)

Description: To provide financial assistance to outstanding college seniors or students in their last year of a Ph.D. program. Must defend by June of the next year (i.e., 17 months after application deadline). Offered by the Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust in memory of Josephine.

 

+Joseph L. Fisher Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships

Amount:      $18,000

Deadline:    February (mid)

Description: To provide funding to doctoral candidates interested in conducting dissertation research on issues related to the environment, natural resources, or energy. Proposals from physical fields must have immediate and obvious link to environmental policy matters (primary research disciplines are economics and other social sciences). Must defend by August of the next year (i.e., 18 months after application deadline). Offered by Resources for the Future (RFF).

^+EPA STAR Fellowships for Graduate Environmental Study

Amount:      $42,000 per year (masters max 2yrs, doctoral max 3yrs)

Deadline:    November (mid)

Description: To fund graduate environmental study for masters and doctoral level students. Many different topic areas. May NOT have completed >1 year in masters program or >4 years in doctoral program.

 

^+Ronald B. Linsky Fellowship for Outstanding Water Research

Amount:      $15,000 per year for 2 years

Deadline:    June, even years

Description: To provide funding to graduate students interested in conducting research in science and technology fields related to water. Awarded to one student every 2 years, in even years, by the National Water Research Institute.

 

+Abel Wolman Fellowship

Amount:      $15,000 stipend / $1,000 supplies / $4,000 tuition & fees

Deadline:    January

Description: To provide financial assistance to doctoral students interested in pursuing advanced training and research in the field of water supply and treatment. Offered by the American Water Works Association.

 

+*P.E.O. Scholar Awards

Amount:      $15,000

Deadline:    November (mid)

Description: To provide funding for doctoral study in any field to women in the United States or Canada. Awards begin in August, at that time need to be within 24 months of graduating but have at least 12 months remaining. Offered by Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Sisterhood, founded in 1869.

 

+AGU Horton Hydrology Research Grant

Amount:      $10,000 in 2 installments (fall AGU meeting and June)

Deadline:    April (mid)

Description: Awarded to up to three students during their candidacy for a Ph.D. degree in hydrology, water resources, or a closely related field. Presented at fall American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting.

 

^+Tau Beta Pi Fellowships

Amount:      $10,000 payable in 10 monthly installments

Deadline:    January

Description: To provide financial assistance for graduate study to outstanding members of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. Several fellowships available.

 

^+GCA Fellowship in Ecological Restoration

Amount:      $8,000

Deadline:    December

Description: To provide funding to graduate students interested in studying or conducting research related to ecological restoration. Administered through UW-Madison Arboretum for the Garden Club of America (GCA).

 

^+American Water Works Association

Amount:      $5,000 - $10,000

Deadline:    January

Description: Several scholarships available, many specify focus on drinking water supply/treatment but others are more open.

 

^+Alpha Lambda Delta Graduate Fellowships

Amount:      $3,000 - $7,500

Deadline:    January

Description: To help qualified members of Alpha Lambda Delta, the first-year honors society, obtain graduate or professional degrees.

 

^+Dr. W. Wesley Eckenfelder Scholarship

Amount:      $5,000

Deadline:    April (mid)

Description: To provide financial assistance to upper-division and graduate students working on a degree in civil, chemical, or environmental engineering or one of the environmental sciences. Offered by Brown and Caldwell.

 

^+*Society of Women Engineers Scholarships

Amount:      $1,000 - $5,000

Deadline:    February

Description: To support women pursuing ABET-accredited graduate programs in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. Several opportunities. SWE membership required for some.

 

^+GCA Zone VI Fellowship in Urban Forestry

Amount:      $4,000

Deadline:    January (late)

Description: For study and research that will advance the knowledge of urban forestry and increase the number of scientists in the field. Administered by Virginia Tech for the Garden Club of America (GCA).

 

^+Chi Epsilon Scholarship Program

Amount:      $3,500

Deadline:    November

Description: To provide financial assistance for college to undergraduate or graduate members of Chi Epsilon, the national civil engineering honor society. Submit through university chapter faculty advisor.

 

^+GSA Graduate Student Research Grants

Amount:      $2,500 max, for research travel or other expenses

Deadline:    February (early)

Description: To provide partial support of Masters and Doctoral thesis research. Must be Geological Society of America (GSA) student member. Can receive total of 2 GSA student grants in entire academic career

 

 

^+Irene Straus Scholarship

Amount:      $1,000

Deadline:    February

Description: To offer financial aid to students and to encourage the study of horticulture, floriculture, landscape design/architecture, botany, forestry, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental studies, city planning, land management, or allied subjects. Offered by the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation.

 

^+SWCS Melville H. Cohee Student Leader Conservation Scholarship

Amount:      $500

Deadline:    February

Description: Provides financial assistance to members of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) who are in their junior or senior year of full-time undergraduate study or are pursuing graduate level studies with a natural resources conservation orientation at a properly accredited college or university. Must be a member of SWCS for at least 1 year before applying.

Amount:      $1,000

Deadline:    July and December (2x/year)

Description: To provide financial assistance for undergraduate or graduate study to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. 250 word essay on 1) why you should win the scholarship, 2) academic career goals, OR 3) any topic of your choice.

 

^+ “Frame my Future” Scholarship Contest

Amount:      $1,000

Deadline:    March

Description: To recognize and reward, with scholarships for continuing study, undergraduate and graduate students who submit original images of what they want to achieve in their personal and professional life after graduation.

 

^+Mensa Scholarships

Amount:      $500-$1,000

Deadline:    January (mid)

Description: To provide financial assistance for undergraduate or graduate study in any field to qualified students. Essay explaining career, academic, and/or vocational goals.

 

^+*College Scholarships Foundation Women’s Scholarship

Amount:      $500

Deadline:    December (late)

Description: To provide financial assistance to women working on an undergraduate or graduate degree. 500 word essay on 1) how your education affected plans for starting a family 2) where women in the workforce are headed OR 3) where you see yourself in 10 years.
